WATCH CROFT

Two areas of Watch Croft - one large and one small - to the west of Carn Galva are now being stock proofed by the National Trust. Once gain this area, although having only one public right of way, has numerous 'unofficial' paths well used by walkers and horse riders. In no way can it be described as overgrown with bracken and gorse, in fact most of it is 'white grass' and, indeed, part of this moor is still named as White Downs. The summit of Watch Croft (outside the HEATH Project area) is the highest point in West Penwith from where there are wonderful 360 degree views of the countryside with splashes of blue sea between the hills.
Plans are (15/11/2008) well in hand to erect a total of almost two kilometres of new barbed wire fencing, 1600 metres of temporary electric fencing (some of it along the road to Trevean), 12 new gates of various sizes, 3 new stiles and two cattle grids on the drive to garden Mine Cottage. Work also includes raising the height of many hedges as well as hedge repairs. On the positive side many new paths have been cut although it remains to be seen if they will be kept clear of growth in future years.
